Reading 7: The Second Sex-2 :- When Simone finds writing a book on woman is irritating!!
So, i just started reading the introduction part of the book "The Second Sex", wherein Simone begins :-
" I hesitated a long time before writing a book on woman. The subject
is irritating, especially for women; and it is not new"
It literally took me hours to figure out why Simone finds talking about woman as an irritating subject.
The point is, I have no background in philosophy, nor have any majors in gender studies, so, in my little understanding, i have always come across people talking about women, calling themselves feminists, though i have never been able to understand it clearly.
Well, reading further, the book further refers about —
"Modern Woman: The Lost Sex, Dorothy Parker wrote: “I cannot be fair about books that treat women as
women. My idea is that all of us, men as well as women, whoever we
are, should be considered as human beings.”
Reading this, i felt, as if; this is exactly something which i wanted to listen and it became so easy to understand why Simone would have found the subjects talking about woman as irritating.
Because the moment, woman is being talked about, it feels as if, she is something different. And a whole series of comparison start getting into- especially comparison with men and this seed within us has been just inbuilt since the day we are born.
Making us feel as if we are not human beings, we are woman, who have certain set of predefined roles that call for surrender, no arguments, no anger, being graceful and all that epic stories revolving around behavior and boundaries for a woman.

Now it makes sense, for a philosopher like Simone, why talking about woman is irritating.
The above quote makes me feel as if- only men are human beings and women are all together a different species.
This battle of being a woman doesn't seem to be an easy one.
I am on a journey reading the Second Sex!!
Stay tuned for further posts!!
Thankyou:)
